Coaching - be accompanied by someone, who is already there
Coaching is a goal- and solution-oriented support process in which one person (the coach) supports another person (the coachee or client) in recognizing, defining and independently achieving their personal or professional goals. The focus is not on providing advice or imparting knowledge, but on promoting self-reflection, personal responsibility and personal development.
Basic principles of coaching
- Voluntariness: Coaching is based on voluntariness. Coaching can only be effective if the coachee is willing to engage in the process.
- Goal orientation: Coaching works with concrete goals. These are defined together and reviewed regularly.
- Helping people to help themselves: The coach does not provide ready-made solutions, but supports the coachee in developing their own solutions.
- Confidentiality: Everything that is discussed during coaching remains confidential. This creates a protected space for openness.
- Resource orientation: The focus is on the strengths and abilities of the coachee, not on deficits.
Role of the coach
A coach is not a consultant, therapist or trainer. He or she:
- asks questions instead of giving answers
- listens actively and empathically
- reflects perceptions and thought patterns
- promotes personal responsibility and clarity
- supports change processes without controlling them
Structure of a coaching process
A coaching process typically consists of several phases:
- Clarification of the assignment: Joint understanding of the goal, scope and expectations of the coaching.
- Assessment of the current situation: Consideration of the current situation, the challenges and the framework conditions.
- Goal definition: Concrete, measurable and realistic goals are defined.
- Interventions and reflection: Use of various methods for self-reflection, resource activation and problem solving.
- Transfer to everyday life: Implementation of findings and strategies in concrete action.
- Conclusion and evaluation: Review of what has been achieved and outlook for future steps.
Differentiation from other formats
- Counseling: The counselor provides professional advice and solutions.
- Therapy: The aim is to treat mental disorders - coaching presupposes mental health.
- Mentoring: An experienced mentor passes on personal experience.
- Training: imparting specific knowledge or skills.
Prerequisites for effective coaching
- Mutual trust and a sustainable relationship
- Clear coaching mandate (no coaching without a mandate) and transparent goals
- Professional attitude of the coach (e.g. neutrality, empathy, ethical behavior)
- Willingness of the coachee to change and reflect
